The winners of this year's Editor's Choice Awards had to meet the highest standard ever: For American Photo's editorial team to choose them, they had to qualify as "game-changing"—to have transformed, or have the potential to transform, the very way photographers work. To be fair to all the other great photo products that came to market this year, that's a tough standard to meet in a field in which progress is largely incremental. But the rigor we brought to bear on the task challenged our preconceptions and helped us transcend our usual category-based thinking.

Many of our winners are exemplars of larger trends in the industry. Sony’s NEX system joins the burgeoning ILC (Interchangeable-Lens Compact) phenomenon, significantly advancing the convergence of still and video capture.

Maybe more unusual, though, is the NEX-5’s fraternal twin, a camcorder called the NEX-VG10. It incorporates the same sensor, lens mount and LCD screen as the NEX-5, not to mention most other features, including still capture. That’s huge news, because it’s the first of its kind with an APS-C-sized chip and silent-focusing inter- changeable optics, thereby offering filmlike shallow focus, low-light prowess and better video handling than any DSLR. And it costs a fraction of any professional equivalent.

Full Spectrum Sony NEX-5 Video

Here is a video from a Sony NEX-5 that has been converted for full spectrum photography, which means the sensor is now sensitive to Ultraviolet, Infrared, and Visible light. The colors in the video is the result of using an Fuji Film SC 58 filter on the Full Spectrum Sony NEX-5.

The conversion was done by Invisible Light Technology.

Sony NEX MS Super Triplet Perar Lens

Here is the smallest available lens for the Leica M mount and Luca A. has mounted it on his NEX-5. It is the MS Optical Super Triplet Perar Lens with a 35mm focal length, 52.5mm equivalent on the NEX and a maximum aperture of f/3.5. A Leica M to Sony E-mount adapter was used.

Here are the key features of the Perar lens:

The MS Optical Super Triplet Perar 35mm f3.5 is limited to 200 pieces and is available for pre-order through Japan Exposures. The lens will start shipping on November 15, 2010.

A note: The aperture ring is different from other lenses in that it does not have click stops and it rotates when you focus the lens. This should not present any problems on Sony NEX Cameras.

We were browsing the Sony Europe support site for the NEX and saw the Sony Memory Card File Rescue Service as one of the software downloads. MCFileRescue.exe (approximately 13.7 MB) can help you recover lost or deleted data from your Sony brand memory card.

The "Memory Card File Rescue Service" is a service to recover data from various types of Sony Memory cards.

This software can be used on all Sony brand Memory Stick™ and SD Memory Card except:

• Non-Sony brand Memory Stick™ and SD Memory Card
• Memory Stick™ for AIBO® robot
• Memory Stick ROM™ for electronic dictionaries or e-Book readers
• PSP®　brand Memory Stick™, Memory Stick PRO Duo™ or Memory Stick Micro™

This software supports recovery of JPG (DCF), MPEG-1, MPEG-4, MPEG-4 AVC file, and other types of files, except AVCHD files.

The Sony eSupport site for US and Canada finally released the Version 03 firmware for the NEX cameras and the LA-EA1 Alpha lens adapter.
