wyan posted some photos from his Sony NEX-5 and the Zeiss ZM 35mm Biogon f/2 lens. The lens has a Leica M mount and an E-mount adapter was used to attach it to the NEX. Excellend subject matter.

The other day we posted a couple of videos from this combination.

  6. Connect USB reader to iPad.
sony nex apple ipad camera connection kit
  7. Make sure the iPad is not in sleep mode. Turn on NEX Camera.
  8. The iPad will start displaying photos from NEX-5 memory card.
    • We had Date folders in the NEX-5 but the iPad displayed all the photos at once.
  9. Select the photos to be imported by clicking on each one, or select none if you will import all the photos.
  10. Click the Import button and choose whether to Import only the Selected Photos or All of the photos.
  11. The iPad will start importing the photos, wait until all the blue checks turn green.
    • RAW files can be imported, but due to their size, take longer to import than JPGs.
  12. Choose whether to Keep or Delete the imported photos from the NEX-5 memory card.
  13. Press the Albums button on the iPad.
    • Do not turn off the camera like in the video. An image was corrupted on the NEX-5 memory card by doing so.
  14. The imported photos will be in the Last Import album. Click on the Last Import album.
    • It is now safe to turn off the camera and disconnect the iPad from the NEX camera.
  15. You can now organize your imported photos or play a slideshow with your NEX-5 photos right from the Last Import album.
*.mts videos from the Sony NEX-5 are not recognized by the iPad Camera Connection Kit and cannot be imported.

Jacek paired the Sony NEX-5 and the Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50mm f/2.8 via a Kipon E-mount to M42 lens adapter and here are his results. He stated that "the threaded plate is upside down which means that lens scale numbers are facing down." He has informed Kipon about this issue. The problem is easily rectified with a screwdriver.

Sony NEX-5 vs Canon S90 Size Battle

sony nex-5 canon s90

The current king of pocket point and shoots, the Canon Powershot S90, goes up against the new contender, the Sony NEX-5 in this size comparison. Let's not mention the depth but the length and width of the two cameras are very close. This is due to the 3" screen that both cameras have. The NEX-5 edges the S90 in pixel resolution, 920k vs 461k.

Sony NEX E-mount Rear Lens Cap on eBay

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

sony nex e-mount rear lens cap

So what happens if you bought the single lens kit and you want to use a Sony NEX E-mount to Leica Lens adapter. Your new E-mount lens will now have to go in the box with it's rear exposed, since the Sony NEX kits don't come with rear lens caps. rjadapter has the answer on eBay. They are now selling the Sony NEX E-mount rear lens caps on eBay.

Hopefully the E-mount Body Cap will come next.

Update: Amazon has Sony NEX body caps and rear lens caps.

Sony NEX NP-FW50 Replacement Battery on eBay

sony nex battery fw50 1080mah

One of the complaints about the Sony NEX camera is the short battery life. Sony rates the Sony NEX-5 with the NP-FW50 battery to last 330 shots (CIPA Standard). We are guessing that most NEX users are not shooting just still images. How can one resist HD videos and the Sweep Panorama, both of which are definite battery hogs.

If you are one who feels the need for backup power, eBay has the answer. Replacement NP-FW50 Batteries are now on eBay. They share the same capacity as the OEM Sony NP-FW50 Battery but not much else. Beware that using third party batteries can damage the Sony NEX camera and can void the warranty.

Sony NEX-5 Summilux-M 35mm Pre-ASPH

Byron aka sixty9 saw the NEX-5 and Summarit-M combination and said:
I like my combination better: the Leica 35/1.4 on the nex5. It's smaller and it's f1.4!

Well here is his combination. He paired the Sony NEX-5 with a Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M Pre-ASPH via Sony NEX E-mount to Leica M Lens adapter. Here are some sample photos with this combination.

New Sony Lenses are NEX Friendly

sony nex zeiss 24mm

Sony NEX-5, LA-EA1 adapter, Zeiss 24mm Distagon

Sony announced the release of 3 new lenses today and 2 of them are very NEX friendly due to their focal lengths. The 1st is the long awaited Zeiss 24mm f/2 Distagon SSM (SAL24F20Z) lens, which is pictured above. This gives the NEX user an equivalent focal length of 3f6mm, perfect all around fov. But this lens shows it's full potential on the full frame Sony Alpha A850 and A900 Cameras - NEX-7?

The second lens is the Sony DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM (SAL35F18). This lens is designed specifically for APS-C sensors, which the NEX cameras use. This gives the NEX user a fast f/1.8 lens for low light shooting with an equivalent focal length of 52.5mm. This one will be priced NEX friendly as well, $200 is our guess.

The third lens will be perfect for head shots, street candids, and trips to the zoo with the NEX. The Sony 85mm F2.8 SAM SAL85F28) gives NEX users an equivalent focal length of 127.5mm. At 175 grams, it's 20 grams lighter than the SEL1855. This will be attractively priced as well at $225, our guess.

Okay Sony NEX engineers, give us the autofocus firmware for the LA-EA1 Camera Mount Adapter now!

Sony NEX-3 18-55 OSS Adobe Lens Profile

adobe lens profile creator sony nex
Paul G took the time and effort and created an Adobe Lens Profile for the Sony NEX-3 and the 18-55 OSS lens using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator.

Lens Profile Creator characterizes three common types of lens aberrations, namely the geometric distortion, the lateral chromatic aberration and the vignette.
Download Paul G's Sony NEX-3 + 18-55 OSS lens profile:
Since Adobe does not support RAW files from Sony NEX cameras, you can only use the Lens Profile with JPGs to correct geometric distortion, lateral chromatic aberration and vignetting.

For now you will have to import the jpgs in Lightroom and you can apply the lens correction. I think adobe will very soon include raw support for the nex though.
Click here to learn more about the Adobe Lens Profile Creator and how to use lens profiles.

Thanks Paul G!

Hopefully Adobe ACR will support Sony NEX RAW files soon and a Lens Profile for the 16mm pancake will be available as well.

Here are some of his shots putting the Sony NEX-5 and the Leica Summarit-M 35mm f/2.5 lens to work. This gives the Sony NEX an effective 52.5mm focal length. The images look very vivid and the colors are spot on.

Spocom Girls Video by the Sony NEX-5

Abbot W. tried out his new Sony NEX-5 and the 18-55mm OSS kit lens on a Glidecam HD2000 Stabilizer. He stated that the HD2000, rated for 2-6lb cameras, may be overkill for the lightweight Sony NEX-5. We are not sure if OSS was turned off as is suggested when stabilizers are used, like tripods and glidecams.

Enjoy the scenery.

Sony NEX-5 Intervalometer for Time Lapse Photography

One major difference between the NEX-5 and NEX-3 is that the NEX-5 has a sensor for wireless triggering. The Sony NEX User Manual mentions remote capability of the NEX-5 but it doesn't mention which remote works. We are assuming that the Sony RMT-DSLR1 Remote Commander but we can't confirm that.

It looks like some ingenious person has figured it out for us. The video above shows an infrared remote controller triggering the NEX-5's shutter. It also allows for intervalometer shooting for time lapse photography, but the intervals are limited. Google translate says "Seconds can be set from 1 to 16 as in the range of 37 seconds." Please let us know if you have a better translation.

Check out switch-science for more info. Buyer beware.

Cosina Voigtlander Sony NEX Leica Lens Adapter

sony nex e-mount cosina voigtlander leica adapter vm
Cosina Voigtlander announced that they will be making Leica M lens adapters for the Sony NEX E-mount. They will be available at the end of the month and will have an MSRP of 19,800 Yen ($228). The street price should be much less. As you can see it will come in black or silver to match your NEX body.
It's great to see support for the new Sony E-mount from a major manufacturer.

Thanks CV!
